REAL TALK - automated online home value estimators (cough* Zillow *cough) generally use a computer algorithm to compare your home against other, comparable homes nearby that have recently sold. However, a computerized algorithm can't see inside your home to factor in the condition it is in or the upgrades you have done, and can't put a price value on special amenities and features. Even if you live in the same neighborhood, houses can have widely different qualities that make the price of the home differ substantially. These online programs also can't take into account the current market condition, which can greatly skew the value they put on your home.
